Conditionals (1)

A bit of the theory
Firstly, let's revise the basic conditionals.
Watch the videos about conditional and then do the tasks below the video.
Choose the corect option and write the correct form of the verb in brackets.
0' conditional -
a) If it (be) hot, don't touch it. If you touch the hot, you yourself.- that is always true. It is a rule.
b) If you click this button, the machine (switch) off. (click this button and the machine always switches off) - instructions
1' conditional -
a) if it's hot weather, I swimming. - it can be hot but it can also rain and then I won't go swimming.
b) If it raining, I will stay home. - otherwise I will go out.
2' conditional -
a) If I rich, I would travel around the world. - but I am not rich, I can't travel. - ratherimpossible situation - a dream
b) If i were you, I talk to her - but I will never be you so it's a piece of advice
3' conditional -
a)If Joe crashed his car, he wouldnt (go) to hospital.- he crashed his car and he went to hospital. Maybe he is still there. - it's a kind of regret that something happened.
b) If I had liked school better, I have studiedmore. - but I didn't like my school, so I didn't study a lot and now I probablydon't know much.
Now, let's mix a little bit:
Look at the examples and answer the questions below:

If you weren't so stupid, you wouldn't have bought this car.

If I had won the lottery, I would be rich.

If I were you, I wouldn't have sold the shares.

If I had phoned Jane, She would be here.

If I were in your shoes, I would definitely have told her the truth

If I hadn't taken that job, I wouldn't be the president of the company now.
Which sentence belowis true?
  • you can mix 2nd and 3rd conditional in both orders.
  • you can mix 2nd and 3rd conditionalonly in this order (if +2nd, 3rd)
  • you can mix 2nd and 1st conditional

Choose the correct option.

In the first column the if -clause refers to situation and the main clauserefers tosituation.
In the second column the if -clause refers tosituation and the main clauserefers to situation.
Have enough?
If you have enough of the theory, take a break and move on to my Mixed Conditionals (2) -Confused hmm, which conditional is that?
If you don't have enough, follow me.

Linking words

When we talk about conditions, we can use many other expressions which re similar in the meaning to " if "
linking word meaning
provided (that), providing (less formal), as long as, on the condition that " if and only if " - emphasises the condition
supposing " just imagine "
unless " if not "
in case to avoid something happening
Look at the examples:
  • I'll help you today providing you do my shift on Friday.
  • Supposing they offered you that job, would you take it?
  • I'll be home by 5.30 unless the meeting finishes late.
  • I'll take a spare battery in case the main one runs out.

Think and tick:

You canuse "supposing" in the
1st conditional
2nd conditional
3rd conditional
You canuse "when" in the
1st conditional
2nd conditional
3rd conditional

Perfect!!!!!!!!!!
Now you can move on to the exercises to practise your theoretical knowledge
Have a nice practice!!
