Languages

What do Game of Thrones' Dothraki, Avatar's Na'vi, Star Trek's Klingon and LOTR's Elvish have in common?

They are all fantasy constructed languages, or conlangs. Conlangs have all the delicious complexities of real languages: a high volume of words, grammar rules, and room for messiness and evolution.

John McWhorter explains why these invented languages captivate fans long past the rolling credits.

1- A conlang is a group of invented words.

2. If you want to speak a language, memorizing vocabulary is not enough, you need to know the grammar rules.

3. Real languages have grammar, whereas most conlangs don't.

4. The author of Elvish made sure that this conlang also changed throughout time in the fictional world he created.

5. When a language starts being spoken in different regions, it develops differently in each of those places.

6- Tolkien created exceptions in the Elvish language just by accident.

7- Tolkien didn't mean to create a language that could be actually spoken.
