Lie/lay/lain/laid/lying/lied - Do you Know the Difference? 

Lie* regular = not tell the truth; lie-lied-lied

Example: Pinocchio’s nose grew 10 centimetres every time he lied.

Lie* irregular = to be flat on a surface (passive); lie – lay –lain

Example: I found him lying on the floor. I thought he was dead.

Lay irregular = to place something down on a surface (active); lay – laid – laid

Example: My hands were full, so I had to lay the books on the table.
 
*Spelling exception: the verbs "to lie" in the gerund become "lying"
