A Bit of Science

Read a short text about Lithium and decide whether the statements are true or false.

Lithium (Greek: ‘lithos’: stone) was discovered by Arfvedson in 1817. Lithium is the lightest of all metals, with a density only about half that of water.

Lithium is silvery in appearance, it reacts with water and imparts a beautiful crimson colour to a flame, but when the metal burns strongly, the flame is a dazzling white.

It does not occur freely in nature; combined, it is found in small units in nearly all rocks and in many mineral springs

It is often used for making batteries as it has a high electrochemical potential. It is also used in special glasses and ceramics. Its compounds are used in air conditioning and industrial drying systems. Other lithium compounds are used in dry cells and storage batteries. Lithium carbide is used for the treatment of mental illness conditions, e.g. depression.

The metal is priced at about $300/lb.

Lithium has been known for about 200 years.

Lithium is a lighter than iron.

Its name comes from a dead language.

It is beautifully red.

You never find lithium compounds in water.

It is widely used in different industrial products.

It has never been used for curing people.

A kilo of lithium costs about USD300.
