The King Day of Service
 
Have you heard of Martin Luther King Jr.? He (be)  a civil rights leader in the 1950s and 60s. King (work)  for the rights of coloured and unpriviliged people, and he (want)  to achieve his goals through non-violent methods. King (have)  a dream, a dream that he (present)  in his "I have a dream" speech in 1963. He (wish)  for a world where humans could live together in peace, a world in which people (be)  treated equally and where there (be)  freedom for everyone. King (receive)  the Nobel Peace Prize for his work.
 
In 1968, King (be)  assassinated. A whole world was (leave)  in grief and shock. To mark his birthday, 15 January, the third Monday in January (be)  made a national holiday. In 1984, the USA (ask)  its citizens to make this holiday not just a day off school or work, but a day of voluntary service. The people of the USA are on this day (ask)  to work together and do something good for their community.
