Lance Armstrong - Survivor (present perfect vs. past simple)
Also see the worksheet on the same theme: http://www.eslprintables.com/printable.asp?id=351034#thetop This exercise is about the inspiring life-story of Lance Armstrong, who survived testicular cancer to win 7 Tours de France. It will reinforce when to use the present perfect or the past simple, (i.e. events with current relevance vs. finished past events). The students will also get practice in reading for detail. Note: Some of the questions have options which are wrong only because they dont fit the context, for example "he has won..." instead of "he won...", because he might win again in the future. These potentially tricky questions are a good opportunity to highlight this aspect of the present perfect.
